Instructional (2019) is a series in which instructions become a form of art. By forming my own instructions as well as performing those other artist's have created previously, exploring the role of the artist as both a participant and as an onlooker. The series followed on from Restoration Calls (2018) and the ways in which commands are used within art.
Photos of Instruction #1 - Scrunch this piece of paper for 30 seconds (2019) within an exhibition can be seen on the exhibitions page, Conscious and Subconscious (2019). The video shows four participants all responding to the shame instruction in different ways.
A Response to Erwin Wurm's 1995 Instruction (2019) is another piece from this series in which I followed an instruction set out by artist Erwin Wurm. The Instruction being:
“Put on a pullover — but don’t stick arms or head through the normal openings —
squat down and pull the end of the pullover down over your knees and feet.
In this position, endure for 20 seconds.”
This was my first exploration into performance art and started a new thought process into how I create my work.
