Artist Statement

I use moving image in my practice, as a way of creating narratives. My work is significantly digitally-based media, most of which being film. Throughout my series of works, I have looked at instructions, combining the digital with nature to produce new ways of investigating day to day life and stillness in moving image. I refer to my works in series as they stand independently of each other, but the common theme of the narratives and reflection used keeps them intertwined.

My most recent project, A Moment in Time (2021), focused on an exploration of the domestic space through the use of stillness in moving image. Inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space (1958), the work features a series of close-up footage from around the home with little to no movement as time progresses through the day. The work allows for a moment of stillness with hesitation as the audience is led into a false sense of security waiting for something to happen.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Fine Art, I have continued my studies in moving image with a focus on cinematography for film and television. This is allowing me to expand my knowledge and develop my understanding of moving image within a wider context.

My practice continues to be inspired by stillness in moving image and the research I have conducted previously consistently plays a role in the way I look at my surroundings.
